I’m Stephanie and I have been doing Life Balance Atlanta’s social media marketing over the last year and a half.   I wanted to take this opportunity to recap what happened at the last Wine and Wellness event with special guest speaker, Rebecca Trussell.  Rebecca is the best in the business when it comes to yoga instruction and yoga therapy in our area.

What is yoga therapy?

I was interested in finding out how yoga practice differed from yoga therapy.  The best explanation comes straight from Rebecca:

“Yoga therapy is a customized application of yoga teachings and practices to provide an integrative approach toward wellness. Using yoga techniques such as meditation, breath-work, postural analysis, muscle testing, myofascial release, and movement, I will develop and implement a plan of care based on your individual goals and needs. Yoga therapy can be its own practice or be used as a complementary treatment alongside psychotherapy, physical therapy, and other medical modalities.”

– Rebecca Trussell

You can think of yoga therapy as having a one on one session with a trained yoga instructor assessing you on multiple levels.  Paying attention to how you move, how you stand, how you think, how you breathe, where is your pain, does the pain come with certain activities or thoughts, etc.  Rebecca has long and impressive bio, and that along with the individualized care she offers to her clients can bring about life changing results.

What we learned that night:

– An in depth education on the several layers of a person and how she can assess what is going on in those layers through her yoga practice tools and observations.

– A live demonstration of how she does a postural assessment and what the postural stance can mean. How you carry yourself in your normal stance can tell a lot about you.

– A great tool to use when anxiety strikes. This was an exercise using your mind, breath and hands to bring your body back to center and lessen anxious feelings. This required no special devices and can be done discreetly at any time.

– A guided meditation where we were all able to become more aware of ourselves and what we are feeling in our bodies versus being bombarded by fleeting thoughts, surroundings and noise.

I learned there are tools to make us more present, more mindful and aware that there are many levels to us that need to be addressed in order to heal, get stronger and overcome health challenges.  I’m thankful to have this great resource in our area and we are so happy to have Rebecca seeing clients at Life Balance Atlanta on Wednesday’s and Thursday’s.

The amount of visits will depend on your individual needs, but typically don’t go past 5 visits. Some will require less visits, yoga therapy is not meant to be a life long treatment rather it’s meant to put you on a healing path. With her guidance and homework you will become more aware of yourself and your thoughts and actions regarding your health.
